The Importance of Well Fitted PPE

Personal Protective Equipment Specialists

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) refers to specialised clothing or equipment designed to reduce exposure to workplace hazards that can cause serious injuries or illnesses.

Employers must provide and maintain a safe working environment without risks to health. This includes providing necessary PPE to their employees and ensure its proper use.

Additionally, employees are required to use provided PPE correctly and adhere to safety protocols and also ensure that the PPE they are using fits correctly and is comfortable.

Proper Fit:
Fit matters! Make sure your PPE fits correctly. Ill-fitting gear can compromise its effectiveness.
For example:
Gloves: They should snugly cover your hands without being too tight or too loose.
Masks: Ensure a secure fit over your nose and mouth, with no gaps.
Safety Glasses: They should sit comfortably on your face without slipping.

Correct Sequence:
When donning PPE, follow the correct sequence. Here’s a general order:
Wash Hands: Always start by washing your hands thoroughly.
Clothing: If you’re wearing coveralls or gowns, put them on first.
Mask and Eye Protection: Put on your mask and eye protection (safety glasses or face shields).
Gloves: Next, wear gloves.
Respirators: If you’re using a respirator, ensure it’s properly fitted.
Other Gear: Finally, add any other necessary gear (e.g., hard hats).

Conduct Regular Checks:
Look for signs of damage, wear, or tears.
Replace damaged items promptly.
For masks, check the seal and filter integrity.
Practice good hygiene – wash your hands before and after using PPE.
Dispose of single-use items properly.

Remember, PPE isn’t just about compliance; it’s about protecting lives. If you ever have doubts or need specific guidance related to your workplace or industry, consult your supervisor or safety officer—they’re there to help.  Or pop into the Falcon showroom to chat to one of our experts.
